'Art & Philosophy': Salon Style Debate
with Dr Martyn Woodward, Amelia Johnstone & Prof Clive Cazeaux
of Cardiff School of Art & Design, Cardiff Metropolitan University
‘I speak, therefore, the world’
Tuesday 2nd May 2017
This is the first of two interlinked discussions around the theme of revolutions in technology, art and philosophy, led by academics at Cardiff School of Art and Design in collaboration with practitioners. Tonight’s discussion focuses on the complex relationship that the photograph has with what we may perceive as ‘truth’, and the role that such narratives play in our understanding of the world. A narrative allows one kind of story to come to light, but often at the expense of other stories being told. When we look at a photograph, should our attention perhaps be given to asking what lies beyond that particular framing of the world?
‘iphone, therefore, I am’
Tuesday 9th May 2017
This is the second of two interlinked discussions around the theme of revolutions in technology, art and philosophy, led by academics at Cardiff School of Art and Design in collaboration with practitioners. Tonight’s discussion looks at the effect of digital technologies and social media on human being and human experience. From the compulsion to be always on view to the idea that digital technologies make new forms of being possible, we shall explore the power of social media in particular to challenge and redefine what it means to exist.
*Running two consecutive weeks as a salon style debate, with a follow up discussion broadcast each Thursday at 6-8pm on Pitch Illustration Radio, Radio Cardiff 98.7FM.
