Between the Lines
'Reading between the lines’ is a set phrase with literal and metaphorical connotations. It suggests concealed, unspoken or avoided narratives. The project Between the Lines provides an alternative abstract interpretation and re-presentation of journalistic narratives. The source of my images is newsprint. Within this context of news communication and opinion forming, images and text are flexible tools for narrative control, ideological agenda setting and groupthink. This is a political arena where information, juxtaposition and contextualization collide. The detritus of the temporal and throwaway media information become my material starting points to shape, form and visualise new iconographic realities
This project aims to unlock the image within the image, to re-evaluate set narratives and to elongate the act of looking and the contemplation of meaning. Here the pictorial life of the photograph /headline text has been stretched taut towards entropy/dissolution - form/formless - signal/noise. This creative dissolution of unlocking images becomes a revelatory transformative act, a solution, where new abstracted meanings are forged.
