Photomontage Works

Commissioned by Ffotogallery in 1989, Merthyr-based photographer Walter Waygood’s contribution to the Valleys Project was a series of photomontage billboards exploring the history of the South Wales Valleys and the demise of its heavy industries in the wake of the closure of the mines and steelworks. Echoing the rallying calls and iconography of the Spanish Civil War, in one billboard the image of a miner with outstretched hand accompanied by the words ’Something Will Be Done’, and in another an image of the derelict Ebbw Vale steelworks is juxtaposed with the poster ’British Steel Making Britain Greater’.
